Travis,

It also appears that you are an uber-Type A planner. There are many that go to Disney World that don't operate that way. This is one of those unknowns that people are afraid of with xPass as well as the enforcement of the return window. For me personally, I'll go to a park with a general idea of 3 or 4 things I want to accomplish, and then a secondary list of things I want to accomplish as time permits. I'll look at the times guide (if necessary), get the first crop of fastpasses and plan accordingly. To the casual guest, this is perceived as a high amount of planning, especially if there's a dining reservation rolled into that day's activities. My family mocks me when I'm setting up dining 180 days out, and then they're shocked when we need the reservation. It was really only on our recent trip over the New Year where my sister and I took hold of each day's plans that there was some concession on the part of my mother that planning was a good thing.

Having said all that, many guests visit the parks now and miss the best attractions because they don't have a good plan. If anything, I think xPass could actually exacerbate that problem. Now, ignorance shouldn't be an excuse, but if these guests are leaving dissatisfied, that can ultimately hurt the company in the long run.

Jim Hill posted an article today about the availability of xPass at 50 some odd attractions. While he incorrectly listed current Fastpass attractions that no longer offer the service, it does seem that with xPass the offerings are certainly expanding. On many days, it won't be needed at attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, Spaceship Earth, or The Great Movie Ride, but it will be available. It's entirely possible, that this actually helps the distribution on some of the higher demand attractions.

The article can be found here: http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2012/02/22/which-wdw-attractions-are-becoming-part-of-the-xpass-experience.aspx

In theory Jim may be correct, that the xPasses distributed for Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller coaster, Toy Story Mania, and Star Tours can be moderated so that the number of xPasses for these attractions is less than those being distributed on the newly added xPass/Fastpass attractions: The Great Movie Ride, MuppetVision 3-D, Beauty and the Beast - Live on Stage!, The American Idol Experience, Studio Backlot Tour.

While I doubt these numbers are at all accurate, they are meant to explain the situation. Say for example that on average, day guests will get 200 Fastpasses for each of the new xPass/Fastpass attractions. That would mean that there are now 1000 more Fastpasses in the system. Presumably, the demand for xPass/Fastpass at these attractions will be less than the demand for the existing Fastpass attractions. As such, 1000 Fastpasses at Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Toy Story Mania, and Star Tours would tie up a guest's ticket for much longer than 1000 Fastpasses at the new attractions.

Therefore, some formula (say 75%, but likely a variable formula) would have to be applied to restrict the number of xPasses made available for the marquee attractions. In my scenario above, I could envision 1000 Fastpasses being distibuted to Day guests at the new Fastpass/xPass attractions, and 750 xPasses being distributed at the marquee attractions.

Tim,

Thank you for your response. I am glad you are forthright in your statement of, "...but my opposition centers around something that’s unknown at this point – I expect it to change the way I tour the park, I’m just not sure how." I would agree with you that this will adjust the way people, (XPass users, and non-XPass users), will tour the park. As for the affordability, anyone can afford a deluxe level trip, even the XPass--whatever the cost may be. I will explain with an example. Last year I took my fiance and 9 year-old step-daughter to WDW for their first time. Another couple wanted to join us, but they could not afford the trip as we were going, (Wilderness Lodge, Club, Deluxe Dinning, Park Hopper Tickets - 7 Days), they could afforded the trip at a value level resort, but that would defeat the propose of going with us as the value resorts are a bit out of the way. So rather than going with us last year, they saved the money and continued to save and now will join us this year. (Beach Club, Deluxe Dinning, Park Hopping Tickets - 9 Days).

Now with the introduction of the XPass, that may not be something they can afford, and depending on the cost of the XPass know I will purchase that option. So that may affect the way my family and our friends tour the park with us. So that could present some challenges.

I think your statement of, "A better comparison is the dining plan. When it was first introduced you could save money on the dining plan with little to no planning. Now it’s getting to the point where in order to save money on the dining plan you need to adjust your dining to get the best value." I completely agree with you on this one. Now I always use Deluxe dining, but this is also because I plan ahead and know what parks I will be in on what day. I only make reservations for lunches with the exception of the first night which dinner is at the Royal Table, and another night for the Spirit of Aloha, and Victoria and Alberts for a alone night with my fiance.

When my 180 days date arrives I will know where to eat, what parks I will go into, I do so because I will eat at the best locations and save money. It is a lot of planning months ahead of arrival. But last year the cost for the Deluxe Dinning Plan was $1,079.82 for me my fiance, and my step-daughter, (who was 9), after adding up all the receipts if we would have had to pay for the meals out of pocket the cost would have gone from the Deluxe Dinning Plan of $1,079.82 to $2,238.16. So planning ahead saved $1,158.34.

I am looking forward to XPass, and today I made some comments concerning this to some contacts I have in the Disney world, and am awaiting their response. I know I am looking forward to the XPass, but I am cautiously exited.

Travis,

I think many of the people that are whining about the premium experience that will be xPass are those people that can't afford it. Disney has always operated in a capitalistic society. Money talks in the parks. If your average family of 4 is making their once in a lifetime trip where they saved up for 10 years - it's entirely possible they will still be saving money by bringing their own food into the parks. That family can't afford to eat at Victoria and Alberts, but does that mean that Victoria and Alberts shouldn't exist? That just seems silly.

Personally, I likely wouldn't be able to afford xPass, but my opposition centers around something that's unknown at this point - I expect it to change the way I tour the park, I'm just not sure how. I outlined some possibilities where it could be an improvement for non-xPass users, but I doubt that will be the case. In all likelihood it will reduce the number of Fastpasses available to regular park guests, and that reduction means that myself and other guests aren't getting as much as we were before. Disney has every right to change their prices (essentially that's what they're doing here) just like we as consumers have every right to not pay for their product. Odds are, I will still find value in a Disney vacation but each of these smaller changes add up. I'm sure that some people have been turned off by these types of changes - to them, Disney has taken away value in an attempt to further monitize something that they previously enjoyed at a different price.

A better comparison is the dining plan. When it was first introduced you could save money on the dining plan with little to no planning. Now it's getting to the point where in order to save money on the dining plan you need to adjust your dining to get the best value.

I'd be interested to see if this is ultimately an option on an Annual Pass, if so I see a huge potential for abuse unless the cost is extremely prohibitive.

WDW Fanboys, I am a new listener. As an avid fan and self proclaimed expert on the WDW resorts and Parks I was interested to hear your thoughts, and knowledge level. First I must say I can recognized your knowledge level, and I was entertained by your pod cast, and will listen regularly.

Now with your Pod Cast Episode #114, I am looking forward to the XPASS, and disagree that if this new XPass is only a benefit of Deluxe Level Resort guests, then that is a negative aspect of Disney. I am okay with this and feel it is something that should be provided; I have no problem with entitlements, especially when I pay for them and am willing to do so. I have stayed in the Deluxe level resorts every visit for the past 9 visits and will continue to do so.

My main reasoning for this is restaurant availability, transportation options, 24 room service, and other features such as larger rooms, and other small benefits. I pay a considerable amount more than a guest staying in a moderate or lower level resort. This is why I have the current perks of restaurant availability, transportation options, 24 room service.

I feel this addition of XPass offered to Deluxe Level Resort guest is fair, because I pay for it. I save and plan my annual trips well in advance. For example I will be staying in the Beach Club Resort at the end of September of this year for 9 days and 8 nights, with Deluxe Dining. I booked this trip 8 days after I returned from last years’ trip. So I am able to budget out to afford the Deluxe trip, and with a Deluxe trip then I want extra perks. That said I feel that WDW will eventually roll out the XPass for all guests, not doing so would take away from the appeal of the WDW culture.

That's a good point - I could definitely see a Mario Kart type game through the parks as Disney characters - that would be a lot of fun. I may have to check that out.

Your video game talk did remind me of the game "Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour" for PSX. This was a kart racer (think Mario Kart, etc.) that had one racing characters through certain attractions such as Jungle Cruise. This might be the 'best' option for a vehicle of a game showing 'realistic elements' of a park as a 'level'; Another might be the RPG sort, aka, elements of the Kingdom Hearts games (PS2, PSP) had Disney-themed levels (primarily movies), with some being rather spectacular.

Note, Disney has always had its characters in games, but it seems the best have been in the 16-bit era... Some of my favorite Disney games (and favorite all-time) include the many on Sega Genesis: Aladdin (Genesis; the SNES version was different and not as good), Quackshot, Castle of Illusion.

KingBob,

I agree - but as much as I would like to see substantial expansion I'm not sure Epcot needs it as much as DAK or DHS.

EPCOT remains my favorite park because I like to travel and it caters to that. It's also uncrowded most of the time, as you've pointed out regarding capacity. But I think it's a real shame that in all these years no new countries have ever been added to World Showcase or any new rides added to what's there either.

The Great Goofini will be the same track layout as Barnstormer. Have you been on Goofy's Sky School in DCA? I'm not a fan - to me it's an improvement over Mulholland Madness, but really has no place in a Disney park.

Are they doing the Great Goofini like the one in Disneyland or is it just going to be the same boring Barnstormer track re-themed?
The one in Disneyland is so fun and cute, almost like Primeval Whirl in AK, but not so much thrashing around and non-sense!

Ok I realize you guys were joking, but it made me think of something. They could actually do a Christmas overlay at mission space using their prep&landing short as a them and it wouldn't be THAT far-fetched...ok maybe not. Lol

I have finally figured it out after trying since October and it was something so simple it never occurred to me. The two links that you supplied for the RSS will not work, they will just state that there is no content available. If you remove the /rss at the end and attempt to add that feed, it will work correctly.

So the two correct feed links are:

The $25 portable SunPass transponder does not give you $25 towards tolls. That is just the price of the transponder, then you need to call or go online to add money to your account. The benefits of the $25 model is that you can move it from car to car, and it will beep when you go through toll booths/open tolling gateways letting you know your toll was paid.

There is also a $4.99 SunPass sticker model. This can't be moved from car to car, and still requires you to call/go online to register your license plate and add money to your account. When this sticker was launched, there was a promo crediting back the $4.99 to your SunPass account, making the sticker "free". They have removed the $4.99 credit message from the packaging, but as of October 2011, they were still applying the $4.99 credit to the new SunPass accounts. Obviously, the sticker can not be moved - you need a different one for each car, so it would not be appropriate for rental cars. It also does not beep - which concerns some people. I've never had an issue with my sticker registering at tolling locations, however.

HI Tim & Paul and of course Brett
I LOVE your podcast! Just when I think, these guys are pretty juvenile, you crack me..I think that Paul is VERY right on with his comments about his (all of our) love for Disney. I have been a fan since I was 2 years of age going to the 1965 Worlds Fair (yeah I'm old) and was enthralled by Small World. I have been lucky enough to go to Disneyland too many times to count, Walt Disney World four times and Disneyland Paris once time. Thanks so much! Alicia

Brandon,

It sounds like you follow the very path that Disney anticipates for us guys. You grow up going to Disney, then you lose interest and then your fandom is restored when you see it through a child's eyes.

My love for Disney started as a child and was nurtured by my grandmother for most of my life until she passed away. She took me to Disneyland as a child, to see all the Disney movies when they came out, and to Disney on Ice whenever it came to town. I went through that period in my life when Disney wasn't cool like I think most fans do. Once I had my son my love for Disney returned. I exposed him to the whole world of Disney and in 2007 we made our first family trip to Disney World. It was extrememly emotional for me not having been to a Disney Park since I was a child and watching my son and daughter have these experiences for the first time. I felt like taking my kids to Disney was a rite of passage, like I was truly a father once I did that. Now, 4 trips to Disney World later, I listen to about 7 different Disney Podcasts, check blogs and sites on a nightly basis. I cannot get enough of Disney. It makes me happy learning about the parks, the history, the issues, and everything that goes along with the company. When we go to Disney World for those 10 days I don't have to worry about work, bills, parenting, my volunteer positions, nothing. All I have to worry about is having fun with my wife and kids and for the other 355 days of the year I don't get to do that. I think Disney gives you a unique opportunity to experience parks with your family. How many other parks do you go to that have kids areas and then roller coasters. I live near Hersheypark in PA and I remember standing and watching my kids on kids rides while I stood there bored and thought, no wonder Walt Disney built himself a park so he could actually spend time with his family, not watching them. Well that was a long response. You can play the crickets drop now.

I agree with both of you. I look at Disney World as an idealized version of reality. We watch movies to escape reality for 2 hours, but we can't fully accomplish that because we're not in the movie. Disney World is designed like a movie. Things are romanticized, things are clean, and things are safe.

I vacation in Disney World because it's an experience that can't be replicated in my every day life.

Paul, I totally agree with what you are saying here. There is something so safe, so wholesome about Disney World that allows people to leave their complicated lives behind them and enter into a land where anything is possible. You can truly leave behind your worries and just participate fully in the magic that makes Disney World such a wonderful place to visit. I have been to WDW well over 40 times, and I really can't get enough. Every time we leave, I just want to go back. People often ask me why I go so much. Don't you get sick of the rides? Wouldn't you rather go somewhere "real"? Frankly, I get enough reality in my everyday life. Reality is really not that great most of the time. It is stressful and complicated. A trip to Disney World is easy and freeing. I don't go for the rides; I go for that intangible feeling that I get when I go there.

I'm a huge theme park junky and love the Disney parks. Epcot, being my favorite for a nice relaxing day. Universal is, in it's own, a very awesome theme park. It's not as large compared to Disney, but offers many attractions that are fun and worth seeing.

Well, I found that story. It's at 1:32 in part 8 of 8. Imagineering Pixar for the Disney Parks, (8 of 8) D23 Expo 2009

Here is the link:

You can see on John's face that maybe he opened up too much, but what a great story and wait till you see the response.

Hi Tim. In episode #093 09/18/2011, you mentioned a story that you had heard where John Lasseter confronted an accountantneer asking him, "are you going to stand at the entrance and tell people that the attraction came in on budget at the expensive of a better experience?" The story you heard is true, but slightly different and was told by Lasseter himself during an imagineering panel during the 2009 D23 Expo. I don't remember which segment he says this in, but it can be found on Youtube under, "Imagineering Pixar for the Disney Parks, (1 of 8) D23 Expo 2009". It's a great discussion and this story was very well received as well as refreshing to hear from a Disney executive. Truly an unusual moment.

Hi! Just wanted to make a comment saying I really enjoyed the podcast. I'm the guy who submitted the Mammoth Falls concept, so I appreciate the kind things you all had to say. I'm glad those on the Podcast seemed to understand and agree for the reasons to show a fascinating part of natural history that is often overshadowed by the dinosaurs.

Regarding lessening the thrill, I agree that DAK needs family rides, but, for fun, I draw these really exorbitant park plans that have lots of added rides, so in that imaginary context there's already a surfeit of family rides (www.idealbuildout.blogspot.com)

Like everyone else, I was seriously impressed by the some of the winner's artwork (for the Time Machine)... so it was nice to have my project discussed in the same company.

Cheers,

Oh, the Zoetrope is HIGHLY underrated! We went to Disneyland last year, my first time since I was 5 (I'm turning 40 in November). Love that everything is so close together (unlike WDW), but didn't dig that it (and CA) were "locals" parks. The service wasn't as good and the other guests were nowhere NEAR as well behaved as the guests at WDW.

Hey guys,

Glad to see you got over to D23. We were at WDW for a training event the exact same week.

I am looking forward to hearing more about what was new for Parks and Resorts at D23 and if there were any new attractions, etc announced. I assume not, but was hopeful that maybe there would be more than what we already know is coming.
