I just read that the monorails will no longer be running during Extra Magic Hours. The news source indicated that the changes appear to be permanent. I read in a travel planning book for Ireland that once smoking was banned from pubs in the Republic of Ireland, a citizen said, “What are they going to do next? Ban drinking in pubs?” Now, I get it. I saw the jobs report on Friday; I know people likely aren’t traveling as much. As such, Disney feels compelled to raise ticket prices twice a year and presumably raise prices on other amenities. I also acknowledge that I can’t complain too much, as Fantasmic is now getting nightly runs again after a long dry spell, Celebrate a Dream Come True is running twice a day, and the ammunition it took to mercifully put High School Musical and Block Party Bash to rest probably put a dent in the expense reports. Yet, I still feel a little discontent.
When I see specials on TV on Walt Disney World, The apparent stock video of EPCOT always includes the monorail hurdling past Spaceship Earth. It’s recognizable, and it has to be the most well known mode of transportation that even WDW virgins know it by a glance. As Tim once said (and had to later edit out), it’s an example of the “other crap” that Disney has been cutting. As he said, and I’ll say, crap probably isn’t the right word. Yet, I feel like it correctly expresses my sentiment to the organization. It smacks of penny-pinching. A 1 day ticket now costs over $90. EMH customers are certainly paying more, and vacationers that would use the monorail to get back to the Polynesian or Contemporary are paying the most. Now you’re asking those individuals who pay a premium to stay at those Deluxe resorts to stuff into a boat to take the exhausting bus ride back to their resort? Come on, Disney. Whatever happened to putting the customer first? You’ll learn soon enough, when you find your consumer affairs mailbox filling up and your premium customers dropping off your lists. No PIN code will save you then.
